The initiative, titled The People’s State of the Union, is being coordinated by the advocacy group MoveOn in partnership with progressive media network MeidasTouch. The program will air simultaneously with the president’s speech, offering an alternative narrative centered on the social and economic impacts of the administration’s policies.
According to reporting by The New York Times, the broadcast will be hosted by political commentators Joy Reid and Katie Phang. Organizers say the event will feature members of Congress, movement leaders, and individuals who say they have been directly affected by federal policies.
The White House has responded sharply to the plan. In a statement released this week, administration officials criticized MoveOn and allied lawmakers for declining to “celebrate and honor” the president’s address. The response underscores the heightened political tension surrounding one of the most closely watched moments of the legislative calendar.
The alternative broadcast is intended to draw public attention away from the official proceedings inside the House chamber and toward what organizers describe as overlooked consequences of the administration’s agenda, including wealth inequality, civil rights concerns, and community safety.
