An agent confirmed to Los Ángeles Press that three drones dropped grenades over the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Playas de Tijuana, “like in the war in Ukraine.”

TIJUANA, Mexico — The U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana issued a security alert to its citizens on Wednesday night after an attack was confirmed against the Baja California State Attorney General’s Office located in Playas de Tijuana. The advisory urged the public to stay informed through local news and avoid the area due to “reports of an attack on the state prosecutor’s office.”

According to information confirmed by Los Ángeles Press through a source within the prosecutor’s office, the assault was carried out using three drones equipped with grenades launched from a nearby area targeting the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Playas de Tijuana.

“The attack was directly aimed at the prosecutor’s office,” said the official, who requested anonymity for security reasons. “Two days ago, the head of the Vehicle Theft Unit in Rosarito was killed at his home with long-range weapons; two weeks ago, Molotov cocktails were thrown inside the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and now they’re using drones — like in the war in Ukraine. The drones came and left just as quickly. We don’t know which cartel is behind these attacks.”

Escalating Violence Along the Border

Recent weeks have seen a surge in violent incidents targeting law enforcement agencies. The killing of the Vehicle Theft chief in Rosarito, the firebomb attack on the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and now the drone-borne explosions in Tijuana mark a dangerous escalation in the confrontation between organized crime and state authorities.

Local outlets such as Baja News and Blanco y Negro reported that the blast caused material damage to the prosecutor’s facilities, but no fatalities have been confirmed. Mexican authorities have not publicly commented on the possible perpetrators or opened lines of investigation, while the National Guard and the Mexican Army (SEDENA) reinforced the area overnight.

U.S. Consulate Issues Rare Public Warning

The U.S. Consulate’s statement is unusual in cross-border relations, as it directly acknowledged an ongoing armed attack near the border — reflecting Washington’s growing concern over security in Baja California.

As of press time, the Baja California Attorney General’s Office had not released an official statement about the incident. Witnesses near Playas de Tijuana reported hearing at least three explosions and seeing drones flying overhead moments before the blasts.

The consulate posted the warning on its official account on X (formerly Twitter), advising U.S. citizens to call (55) 5080 2000 for emergency assistance both from Mexico and the United States.
